FACE THE THREAT

Training and Recruiting Seminar Highlights

The Face the Threat: Recruiting and Training Seminar was held 23-25 September, 2003. The turn-out was exceptional with approximately 50 officer and medics taking part in the three day session. The training was a multi-layered event with as many as three different tracks going on at once. Wednesday night found the attendees at the La Quinta Inn enjoying the hospitality of ASTECH, Incorporated and M.A.C. Uniform at the "Off Duty" Room. Door prizes were given away from a variety of vendors.

The training was the main reason for the attendance however. The attendees were not disappointed. Mario Martinez, HRT Training, Inc presented two blocks of instruction. His Covert Entry Block emphasized the equipment set-up and team movement to accomplish the stealth required to be successful in these type of entries. Officers were also exposed the SCIAX pole camera system during this block. Mr. Martinez also conducted the CQB Firearms Block. The use of firearms in the CQB environment is a critical skill and the techniques were well received. Also while at the range the officers were exposed to frangible ammunition by Joe Coury of International Cartridge. Various weapon systems and tactical equipment were on display by Barry Peterson of RING Associates.  COL (R) Thomas Brown of B Company, LLC of Huntsville, AL provided a copy of his corporation's XM8, a 5.56mm assault rifle for firing and exposure.

The Homewood PD Tact Team provided a block of instruction on vehicle and bus assaults. The critical teamwork involved in planning, staging, executing and recovery of victims was emphasized during this block.

Tactical medics received training in field skills required to perform their critical tasks. The medic trainers were SGT Blake Strickland (Homewood PD), LT Robbie Miller (Hoover FD), Kenny Booth (Homewood FD).
